Solution for Section 3.2 Question 1

1.  A rational number is any number which can be written a quotient of integers (ie a fraction). This includes all terminating and repeating decimals.

a) True. 0 and 0.3777... are both rational since 0 = 0/1  and 0.3777... = 34/90.

b) True. sqrt7.jpg (651 bytes) is irrational but sqrt25.jpg (679 bytes)= 5/1 which is rational.

c) False. Consider the number p,  3 leq.jpg (599 bytes) p leq.jpg (599 bytes) 4, but p is irrational.
