This is the home page for MATH7040, Semester 1, 2008. You may like to check
this page, and the associated links, with some frequency. Most information
about the course will be made available on these pages.
MATH7040 is only available to students enrolled in a graduate certificate
of education. This course is equivalent to the undergraduate course MATH1040.
Everything about MATH1040 is also
relevant for MATH7040, except as noted below. Thus I suggest you print the
following information, then follow the link to the MATH1040 page.
When you are
reading information about MATH1040, the only things which are different in
MATH7040 are as noted here.
- MATH7040 students are not expected to attend any classes, and should
not need to do so. However, if you want to attend any MATH1040 classes then
you are more than welcome to do so.
- MATH7040 students are encouraged to contact me (details on the course
profile) with any
mathematical or other problems they are having. In particular, you can ring
or email me (and I will phone back if you are calling remotely). Note that
you can leave a message with the departmental secretaries and I will call back.
- Assessment for MATH7040 students is slightly different. You will not be
required to attend tutorial classes, so will not receive 10% for attendance.
Instead, you have an additional assignment worth 10% that requires you to
develop some resources appropriate for teaching Maths B at high school.
Secondly, assignments are due weekly in MATH1040. In the interests of greater
flexibility, we are very happy to accept MATH7040 assignments after the
published due dates. I suggest you aim to submit assignments no more than
about a week or two late. (One way to do this is to try and submit 2 assignments
per fortnight, rather than 1 per week.)
- Assignments should be mailed to the University of Queensland, to an
address which you will be advised. We will mark the assignments and send them
back to you. We'll be a bit flexible: if you are finding the assignments too
hard or too long without tutorial classes to help, then we may not ask you
to answer all of the questions.
- We will mail to each MATH7040 student all of the worked examples from
lecture notes. You can work through them, transfer them to
your lecture notes (if you like), and contact me with any questions. We will
mail these examples to you before they are covered in MATH1040, so you will
not be disadvantaged.
- Take special care not to fall behind! I will keep mailing you and posting
on the web a description of where we are up to in MATH1040, and where we think
you should be up to.
- We will make special arrangements for you to sit midsemester and final
exam papers. These details will be finalised and advised later.
I cannot stress strongly enough that you should contact me with any problems
you are having, requests for help, or any suggested changes. Mathematics at
UQ has not delivered any courses remotely before, so there will probably be
unexpected complexities. We genuinely welcome the opportunity to organise and
operate in amore effective manner.
Now, have a look at the MATH1040 web page for other information.
