Hint for Section 1.3 Question 1a

1a) The first step is to translate the argument into symbolic form. To form an argument we need a collection of premises and a conclusion. The conclusion is normally the statement which begins with "Therefore", "Hence" or "Thus".  In this case, there are two premises. The first premise is "If wages are raised, then buying increases." The second premise is "If there is a depression, then wages are not raised." The conclusion is "Therefore, either there is not a depression, or wages are not raised."

Let w represent "wages are raised", let b represent "buying increases", and let d represent "there is a depression." Now write each of the premises and the conclusion in symbolic form.
